Genuine Broaster Chicken [Bandra]

No, no, no….

That’s our answer to your questions that sound somewhat like – Have you turned non-vegetarian? Did you finally try chicken? Were you lost?

But then, what were we doing at a place that is named Genuine Broaster Chicken you ask? Well to that we have an answer!

Genuine Broaster Chicken, without a doubt, boasts of insanely good chicken specialities (some of which were sampled by our friend and she nods in affirmation), but there is no dearth of option for us good ‘ol vegetarians. Everyone behind the menu curation, from the agency to Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, have made sure to not made us feel left out. There is an equal mix of veg and non-veg dishes that are Indianised and made oh so yum! by the chef.

So yes, us being here is more than okay! In fact, it would be foolish for anyone to miss out on this place just because the name favours meat.

We visited the Bandra outlet of GBC on a weekend and though we were amongst the first people at the restaurant, it was packed in no time! The ambience of this place is amazingly chic and quirky. Chicken humour and photo frames that are an ode to quiet a few American sensations – Captain America, Marilyn Monroe, et. al. cover quite a bit of the walls. There are baseball helmets that are used as bulb holders and also plant holders. Gunny bags and fairy lights add a charm to the ceilings. Even the table tops are covers with caricatures of Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey amongst others. The music is groovy and adds to the rockstar ambience.

There is a well lit and funky looking bar area and different sitting arrangements to pick from.

Orange Limer

Since we reached here after braving the scorching heat, we decided to order cooler and freak shakes first.

Orange Limer was slightly tangy and the orange flavour was overpowering. It was slightly on the sweeter side but had a welcome refreshing taste.

Jim Jam Strawberry Freakshake is a delight to dig into! Topped with Jim-Jam biscuits, chocolate balls that melt in your mouth, marshmallows and lots of strawberry compote, this freak shake is sinfully delicious.

It is slightly on the heavier side with lots of whipped cream, strawberry ice cream and more.

Jim Jam Strawberry Shake

We called for Tex-Mex Franchos and settled to familiarise ourselves with the menu. Crispy french fries in cream cheese sauce and a tangy salsa sauce, topped with lots of chopped tomatoes, onions, jalapenos and olives. The salsa is really yummy and makes you go lick your fingers.

Tex-Mex Franchos

We then called for the chef special Firangi Palak Paneer Dip. The description of the dish does not do much more than making us picture a spinach-cheese dip instead of hummus with pita bread. It does not do even a tiny bit justice to the delight that this dish is! Just to let people know what they should anticipate, I suggest the owners should add the word delicious before every word in the name. That is how good the Palak Paneer dip is! A cheesy and creamy dip with small chunks of soft paneer and lots of spinach. Spinach adds an amazing flavour to the dip but does not over power it. We are not exaggerating when we say that we licked the dip off the bowl.

Firangi Palak Paneer Dip

Pro Tip: If you happen to visit this place, order for as many portions of the Firangi Palak Paneer Dip as the number of people you are, to avoid any casualties. And do this even before you settle down!😉

In our opinion, the restaurant should put this disclaimer on one of the walls! 😛😉

Veg. Ghotala Khichdi

Riding high on happiness, we went for another special from the menu – Veg. Ghotala Khichdi. No please, do not make that meh face, ‘coz then you will want to punch yourself for making it! Ghotala Khichdi is a delicious biryani made with lots of veggies and also has soft paneer chunks. It is high on spices and so fragrant and flavoursome, that our mouth is still watering as we think about it. Cinnamon does wonders to the dish and this one is another definitely try items if you are a biryani fan.

Chow Chow Noodle and Paneer Burger

Then came our Chow Chow Noodle and Paneer Burger – something we had our eyes on from the moment we were handed the menus! Chinese spiced noodles and crispy paneer based patties with mayonnaise and schezwan sauce. This one is lip-smacking though we personally feel it should have been a little high on the sauces.

GBC boasts of some delicious desserts, some epic combinations and fusions. We decided to go with the chef special and yet keep it simple, thus picking the Gulkan Muffin. The muffin served warm, had a slightly crusty outer layer and was toothsome. The centre was filled with Gulkand and yet it was not overly sweet. Totally loved it!

A friend tried the Assorted Chicken Wings Platter and could not stop raving about them – the flavours were perfectly balanced and really good! Her recommendations – Butter Garlic Chicken Wings and Kung Pao Chicken Wings.

Overall Experience: We don’t know the chicken way to say it, but we came out thrilled! Amazing ambience and scrumptious food. The service is quick and friendly. The servers are well versed with the menu and are ready to help and suggest. The food is not overly pricey and is definitely value for money.

GBC is a perfect place to spend some fun time with you friends and family.

The Battle: If what we said has not already made it clear, try going in a group and ordering one portion of Firangi Palak Paneer Dip. What will happen between you and your gang happened between us, only worse!

P.S.: There are two outlets of Genuine Broaster Chicken (GBC) in Mumbai (as of now) and they are planning to come up with many more. GBC is a QSR chain, yes, but the attention towards ambience, food, presentation and hospitality is impeccable. We only hope it stays the same!

Also, Broaster is a technique of making the fried dishes (especially chicken) in a way that they absorb up to 50% less oil and are really low in trans-fat content.

Café Trofima [Shivaji Park, Dadar]

Day 1: *As we drive by* Hey look, that looks like a nice place. We should go here sometime.

Day 20: I heard Xyz went to Café Trofima. I really want to go there. Let’s please go!

Day 32: Yet again we are passing by this place and not entering.

Day 59: *As we drive by, again!* This is heights. Why do we always have somewhere else to go and never here?

Day 139: *Phone Beeps*

Friend No. 2 – Hey, It’s been long. Let’s Catch up. Friday?

Me – Hey! Friday seems diffic….. *another message arrives*

Friend No. 2 – How about Café Trofima?

Me – *Deletes previously typed message* Hell yes! It has been ages! Time?

And finally, Day 141 – Yes Yes Yes! At last, enter Café Trofima 😉

Cutting the super long story short, we have been waiting for months to visit this place and finally, it happened!

Café Trofima is a mid-sized café located at a prime corner on the main road in the ever so crowded Shivaji Park. Every time we passed by this café, we felt it was a complete fine dine place. As we entered, we noticed, although it was still a fine-dine, it had a very young vibe to it.

With the slightly dim lights, grey and white interiors and the colourful frames and cups adding a fun vibe, the café is cozy and comfy! Colourful chairs, pillars covered with 3D writings of dishes the café serves. A dessert counter displaying mouth-watering pastries and cakes and other bakes along with boards that mention the specials of the day. Tall French windows, soft music, the smell of rich coffee…it is a perfect French style café with lots to offer.

The freak shakes at Café Trofima are pretty famous, so we started with Freaky Anni Oreo. Thick Oreo milkshake, loaded with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It has every good thing that exists on the dessert planet – Oreos, Chocolate Cigars, Choco Chips, Gummy bears, Marshmallows and lots of chocolate sauce! Sinful, but good.

Freaky Anni Oreo

Chilli Garlic Potato Wedges were crisp wedges topped with lots of chilli flakes and had a slight garlic flavour to them. A spicy pesto sauce would have done wonders.

They nailed the salsa sauce in the Nachos which was a good combination of spicy and tangy. Crispy tortilla chips, loaded with beans and salsa along with lots of cheese, this one, we loved!

Red Velvet Cupcakes were decent, probably our timing was wrong, coz they had become a little too dense. Dark Chocolate Cupcake was yummy.

We also ordered String Zucchini and Olives Open Cheese Baguette. Crispy bread with parboiled zucchini, bell peppers and olives and lots of cheese. Cheese overpowered the flavours in this one.

Mushroom, Capsicum and Onion Pizza
Passion Fruit Mojito

What we loved was the Mushroom, Capsicum and Onion Pizza.

A thin crust pizza with lots of veggies and loaded with Cheddar and Mozzarella cheese, this one was delicious!

The cheese was not chewy and with each bite, the flavours of cheese and veggies came out perfectly.

Passion Fruit Mojito was much more minty and much less passion-fruity, but refreshing nonetheless.

Red Thai Curry with Rice was the star of the show with the perfect creamy smooth gravy having an undertone of coconut.

The rice was fragrant and well separated. The Thai Gravy was loaded with veggies and taste delicious!

Overall Experience: The food is good here, not out of the world. Some things are good and there are some misses. Sadly, we expected a lot more. The prices are all inclusive of taxes. The service is friendly and courteous but a tad slack. Although we loved the fact that nobody bothered us with ‘what next, sir/madam’ questions!

The Battle: Freaky Oreo Anni will turn you into a battling freak. You will fight anyone and everyone for this one!

Freaking Out with Freak Shakes at Dinshaw’s Xpress Café [Oshiwara]

Me to Google: Freak Shakes
Google to Me:
1. The rise of the monstrous drink… (really? Monstrous?)
2. Images (I have those! I am a blogger 😛)
3. Freak shakes in London…(as much as I would love to be there, I am not. And I thought you knew that 🙄)
4. How To Make… (let’s not get carried away Google!)
So I change my search….
Me to Google: What is a Freak Shake?
*Still no Wikipedia*❓
Google to Me: 1. A
1. A high-calorie mega milkshake…. (Oh my, why did I do that to myself!)
And the search ends before the excitement to try Dinshaw Xpress Cafe’s turns to depression!
No no….that won’t stop me from trying them. It will only make me eat everything up 😎 😝
So I call friend no. 1 and ask him to take friend no. 2 on a con. call while I call friend no. 3.
You see, friend no. 2 will call me a freak for wanting to try the monstrous high-calorie drink, and I don’t need that negativity!
Let friend no. 1 get his share!
Anyway, with all of them in, we head to Dinshaw (yup, we have a nick/short name for the place. That’s how much we love it!)
We order the freak shakes at Dinshaw that have, if I may borrow from Google, taken Instagram by storm:
1. Salted Caramel Freak Shake
2. Oreo Freak Shake
3. Chocolate Brownie Freak Shake
Salted Caramel Freak Shake
Salted Caramel Freak Shake was a pure pure delight! You are mean Google, for agreeing to let people call this divine dose a monster! It was heavenly.
Loaded with caramel and just the right amount of saltiness. So delicious! The rim of the jug was covered in caramelised popcorns, delicious and crisp! And then there was whipped cream 😍 Loved it!
Friend no. 2 did not say it, but I know she was happy she came.
Oreo Freak Shake
Oreo Freak Shake obviously doesn’t need a description or a validation for its epicness.
Oreo here and Oreo there and Oreo everywhere, this was amazing! Thick textured and not too sweet, this one you gotta treat yourself to!
By now the four of us had stopped story swapping and were focused on getting just another sip of the goodness, dare we miss out on the last crumb or drop!
Chocolate Brownie Freak Shake
Chocolate Brownie Freak Shake is a paradise for Brownie lovers. Not only was it perfectly chocolatey, but also nutty! I know I said it already, but boy, was this good! Yummm to the last sip!
Friend no. 1 and 3 could not stop telling me how amazing this was.
All this while friend no. 2 was secretly hogging on the remains of the monsters, that sneaky female!
After such an amazing feast, we hardly care about the high calories, and so shouldn’t you!
