Butters Tipsy Gastropub [Fort]

Butters Tipsy Gastropub is the latest addition to the sprawling pub and food scene in Fort. We visited BTG for dinner the other day and were mind-blown. Though they probably wanted us to be high and tipsy on their amazing (we hear) cocktails, we are high on the delicious food, tipsy and giddy with excitement and satisfaction.

From the ambience to music, to food and drinks, Butters gets it right. A beautifully lit mesh of sorts greets you once you enter. As you step upstairs, the bar is what catches your attention first. A modish look overall, it is lit up and well stocked. Did we mention we are fans of how the lights jazz up the entire place? It is dimly lit and yet bright enough. The ambience makes you want to sit back and relax but the music makes you want to groove. The area is spacious and there are different options of seating available.

The menu gives us quite a few options. Pick quick bites or chakna combinations and your drinking session is surely sorted. There are Indian snacks like bhajiyas, bhurji pao and drunken bhel. They have sandwiches, baos, burgers, pizza, pasta as well as Indian main course like naan and dal. The full package. They have made a name for themselves for their cocktails, but it is worth mentioning that their mocktails are equally good.

Here is what we got tipsy on, at Butters Tipsy Gastropub –

Bhaji Pao – Bhajiya pao with an option between kanda (onion) bhaji, methi bhaji or cheese pakora. We picked onion bhaji. Crispy fritters that were topped with a little chaat masala and served with a sweet-spicy mint chutney.

3 Cheese Sandwich

3 Cheese Sandwich

Sorry, were we supposed to describe that?

There is cheese, lots of it and three different types of it. Do you know how high that made us? So ya, excuse us if we forgot that we have to describe it 😉 😉

Cheesiness aside, (pun totally intended 😉),  the 3 Cheese Sandwich at BTG is heavenly and loaded for sure. The aroma of cheese coupled with butter made our mouths water. Must try! And it is served with french fries for added happiness and salad if by some cosmic mistake it made you guilty 😉

Chef Lampok’s Paneer Satay

Chef Lampok’s Paneer Satay – Soft paneer that is covered with a thick layer of batter and grilled. It has a soothing lemongrass aroma and a slightly charred flavour. It was served with a peanut dip that was slightly on the sweeter side.

Lasooni Palak Paneer aur Naan – This dish features in the desi corner of the menu but it should feature in the Do Not Miss Out corner. Delicious is the word to describe this one. The strong aroma makes your mouth water and threatens the chances of getting a decent picture 😛

It is creamy and has tons of chopped garlic and onions to flavour it up. The paneer pieces are really soft and well marinated and the palak gravy is another level of goodness. Served with naan and papad, this is one meal you must have here.

From the mocktails we tried Melon BullTropical Thunder and Gin Cin Apple Jack.

Melon Bull and Tropical Thunder

Melon Bull is a mindblowing mix of watermelon juice and red bull. It has a sharp taste and the chunks of watermelon add a little drama to it.  Tropical Thunder is a thunderous concoction of orange and pineapple juice, both in the right proportions to leave a strong punch. This one has a slight tart though grenadine adds a little sweetness. Loved this one too! Gin Cin Apple Jack is slightly on the sweeter side but a fine combination of apple juice infused with cinnamon.

Gin Cin Apple Jack

We also tried the Orange and Strawberry Slush which is really good. They have arrived at the perfect balanced flavour of sweetness and sourness in this chilled drink. And the colours! Loved it.

Orange and Strawberry Slush

The star of the dinner was the Raspberry and White Chocolate Mousse. My god what a delight this one was. Smooth in texture, not overly sweet and so delectable. The sharp tart of raspberry paired with the slight sweetness of white chocolate gave this heavenly dessert. We licked out spoons till they were spanking clean 😛 This one is definitely a must try at BTG.

Overall Experience: Lip – smacking food, superb ambience, groovy music and good service make BTG a must visit place.

Café Trofima [Shivaji Park, Dadar]

Day 1: *As we drive by* Hey look, that looks like a nice place. We should go here sometime.

Day 20: I heard Xyz went to Café Trofima. I really want to go there. Let’s please go!

Day 32: Yet again we are passing by this place and not entering.

Day 59: *As we drive by, again!* This is heights. Why do we always have somewhere else to go and never here?

Day 139: *Phone Beeps*

Friend No. 2 – Hey, It’s been long. Let’s Catch up. Friday?

Me – Hey! Friday seems diffic….. *another message arrives*

Friend No. 2 – How about Café Trofima?

Me – *Deletes previously typed message* Hell yes! It has been ages! Time?

And finally, Day 141 – Yes Yes Yes! At last, enter Café Trofima 😉

Cutting the super long story short, we have been waiting for months to visit this place and finally, it happened!

Café Trofima is a mid-sized café located at a prime corner on the main road in the ever so crowded Shivaji Park. Every time we passed by this café, we felt it was a complete fine dine place. As we entered, we noticed, although it was still a fine-dine, it had a very young vibe to it.

With the slightly dim lights, grey and white interiors and the colourful frames and cups adding a fun vibe, the café is cozy and comfy! Colourful chairs, pillars covered with 3D writings of dishes the café serves. A dessert counter displaying mouth-watering pastries and cakes and other bakes along with boards that mention the specials of the day. Tall French windows, soft music, the smell of rich coffee…it is a perfect French style café with lots to offer.

The freak shakes at Café Trofima are pretty famous, so we started with Freaky Anni Oreo. Thick Oreo milkshake, loaded with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. It has every good thing that exists on the dessert planet – Oreos, Chocolate Cigars, Choco Chips, Gummy bears, Marshmallows and lots of chocolate sauce! Sinful, but good.

Freaky Anni Oreo

Chilli Garlic Potato Wedges were crisp wedges topped with lots of chilli flakes and had a slight garlic flavour to them. A spicy pesto sauce would have done wonders.

They nailed the salsa sauce in the Nachos which was a good combination of spicy and tangy. Crispy tortilla chips, loaded with beans and salsa along with lots of cheese, this one, we loved!

Red Velvet Cupcakes were decent, probably our timing was wrong, coz they had become a little too dense. Dark Chocolate Cupcake was yummy.

We also ordered String Zucchini and Olives Open Cheese Baguette. Crispy bread with parboiled zucchini, bell peppers and olives and lots of cheese. Cheese overpowered the flavours in this one.

Mushroom, Capsicum and Onion Pizza
Passion Fruit Mojito

What we loved was the Mushroom, Capsicum and Onion Pizza.

A thin crust pizza with lots of veggies and loaded with Cheddar and Mozzarella cheese, this one was delicious!

The cheese was not chewy and with each bite, the flavours of cheese and veggies came out perfectly.

Passion Fruit Mojito was much more minty and much less passion-fruity, but refreshing nonetheless.

Red Thai Curry with Rice was the star of the show with the perfect creamy smooth gravy having an undertone of coconut.

The rice was fragrant and well separated. The Thai Gravy was loaded with veggies and taste delicious!

Overall Experience: The food is good here, not out of the world. Some things are good and there are some misses. Sadly, we expected a lot more. The prices are all inclusive of taxes. The service is friendly and courteous but a tad slack. Although we loved the fact that nobody bothered us with ‘what next, sir/madam’ questions!

The Battle: Freaky Oreo Anni will turn you into a battling freak. You will fight anyone and everyone for this one!

Cafe Free India [Lower Parel]

Hidden in the bylanes of Lower Parel, there is a relaxed and dimly lit joint – Cafe Free India. The name intrigued me, kinda got me thinking, why ‘Free India’? No, the decor is not based on the freedom fight but has a very welcoming vintage touch to it. One can easily imagine sitting by the window, sipping on a cup of coffee while staring away at the busy street.

The cafe is located bang opposite Deepak Talkies and should be very easy to locate if one follows the map.The street is a one-way street, and parking could be a little tricky for newbies. The cafe is pretty huge but was kinda empty for a Sunday evening barring a few occupied tables.

We started with the Lemon Iced Tea which was on the house. It was perfect and just helped quench the thirst.

Lemon Iced Tea

Cafe Free India is pretty well known for burgers, and so we decided to order the Piri Piri Cottage Cheese Burger, and boy am I glad we made that decision? The burger is on the crispier side but still maintains the juiciness of the cottage cheese. It leaves a lingering tangy – spicy taste of the famous Indian pickles, making it just perfect! And it comes with a huge portion of crispy fries as sides!!

Next, we decided to dig into White Sauce Penne Pasta, or more precisely – Penne Tossed with Sundried Tomatoes, broccoli ,and garlic cream. The first dig into the loaded pasta and our taste buds were dancing. The white sauce is just perfection and can easily crawl into my list of great pasta you must try. The presentation is basic, but the taste more than makes up for it. And food is more for the taste buds than for the eyes, right?

Penne Tossed with Sundried Tomatoes, broccoli ,and garlic cream

We were full. Like really full. But you know me, I cannot say ‘no’ to dessert, especially if it is Red Velvet Cupcake. Although this time, I wish I had. The cupcake was just basic. It was served cold, and the cake (base) was almost tasteless in comparison to the sweet and delectable cream cheese on the top.

Red Velvet Cupcake

Overall Experience: The service is great and the food is amazing. Trying their burgers is highly recommended considering the Piri Piri one left me wanting so much more! And the place is not even heavy on the pocket.

The Battle: You are seriously going to battle yourself this time, ‘coz you are not going to want to leave the super cozy ambience behind. And burgers, need I even point that one out?

Kyani & Co. [Marine Lines]

My visit to Kyani & co. can be attributed to Mumbai’s whimsical  weather – sudden showers, an amazing cloud covered sky and five hungry friends! Nariman point was calling and Kyani was on our minds.

With its quaint, old-worldly charm, Kyani & Co (let’s stick to Kyani from now) is the oldest and one of the most revered Irani cafe/joint in Mumbai. Ardent fans swear by its bun maska & tea, coin khari, mawa cake and caramel custard. The setup is fairly basic with glass-topped tables, cream-coloured walls, desserts and bakes on display and a grumpy old Irani running the joint. The menus are right there on all the tables under the glass top. Kyani serves a wide variety of items from rolls to cutlets, puddings to cakes, and biscuits, as well as sandwiches to burgers.

The attitude of the place is ‘eat-n-go’ and if you expect hospitality or even as much as a smile from the people here, you are in the wrong place. As wrong as this attitude is, they have no dearth of followers and fans, and they frankly do not care! But then, this is one of the essentials in the making of a famous Irani cafe, right?

You know you cannot go wrong with a choice that features in every ‘Things to do in Mumbai’, ‘Legendary Restaurants’, ‘must visit places in Mumbai’, et. al list! With that thought in our mind, we bombarded the waiter with our order. A spread so wide, I am surprised how they manage to remember everything without writing anything down!

The order included  sandwiches, and cutlets, and sausages, and fish fingers, and of course their famous melt-in-your-mouth bun maska, and a lot more!

My favourite item here was the Parsi Omelette. Every single time that I have complained of not finding ‘that perfect omelette’, I was told to visit Kyani. And boy was I happy to finally have had this delicacy? Great taste and so filling!

Parsi Omelette

Once we were almost full, came the turn for Caramel custard, Parsi Custard and Two-in-one Jelly. These were totally the piece de resistance of the meal. The caramel custard and Parsi custard were so creamy and scrumptious, they can easily beat the most exquisite cheesecakes and panna cotta of the elitist places! Creamy, delicious with the perfect mouth-watering and pleasant aftertaste!

We ended our perfect hogging session with coin khari, bun maska and tea!

Overall Experience: Amazing food and so pocket-friendly, you feel like you are in pre-pre-independence India! 😉

The Battle: Moving after having stuffed so much! And stopping yourself from ordering ten more of those amazing caramel custard cups! My mouh is watering at just the thought of it.

I am definitely going back, and you should make that visit soon too!
